Back Glass Replacement in Charlotte, NC

Back glass replacement in Charlotte, NC is rarely planned. A rear window usually goes all at once: a branch comes down in a storm, a stone flies up off a mower, someone breaks in, or the glass simply bursts on a hot afternoon after an old knock. One minute the rear window is there, the next the back seat and cargo area are full of small glass cubes and the car is open to the weather. This page explains what Impex Auto Glass does to replace a rear window or a pickup’s back glass, how long it takes, what to do before the technician arrives and how the claim usually works.

Auto Glass Replacement Charlotte is a website of Impex Auto Glass. Impex is based in Charlotte at 5641 David Cox Rd and does the work where your vehicle is parked, across the city and in Steele Creek, Pineville, Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly and Cramerton. We work with all major insurance providers.

Why a rear window breaks the way it does

A windshield is laminated: two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them, so it cracks but stays in one piece. Most rear windows are tempered instead. Tempered glass is heat-treated so that when it fails it breaks into small, blunt pieces rather than long, sharp shards, which is safer for the people in the car. North Carolina’s G.S. 20-135 requires safety glass wherever glass is used in a vehicle’s doors, windows and windshield, and tempered glass is one of those safety glasses.

The catch is that tempered glass cannot be repaired. A chip in a windshield can often be filled; a chip in tempered back glass usually means the whole pane lets go, sometimes hours or days after the hit. Once it breaks, the only fix is a new pane. Some newer vehicles use laminated glass in the rear as well, which cracks rather than shatters. Either way, a broken rear window is a replacement job.

What is built into back glass

Back glass is more than a window. Look closely and you will see fine lines running across it: that is the defroster grid, a printed heating element that clears frost and fog. On many cars the same glass also carries the radio antenna, a hole and seal for the rear wiper, a brake light mount or a tinted finish from the factory. Pickups bring their own variations: fixed back glass, a sliding center panel, a power slider, a heated slider.

All of that changes which glass your vehicle needs. Impex verifies the part against your vehicle identification number before ordering, so the replacement carries the same grid, connectors and fittings as the glass that broke. Have the VIN ready when you ask for a quote. It is on the dash at the base of the windshield and on the driver’s door frame.

Tell Impex which vehicle it is and that the rear glass is broken. If you know whether it has a defroster, a wiper or a sliding panel, say so; the VIN tells Impex the rest.

How back glass is replaced

  1. Clear the glass. The broken glass is taken out of the frame, and the loose pieces are cleared from the seats, the cargo area, the rear deck and the channels the glass sat in. Tempered glass gets everywhere, so this takes care.
  2. Take off the trim. Interior panels, the rear wiper and any mouldings that hold the glass are removed.
  3. Prepare the opening. On bonded back glass, the old adhesive is trimmed and the frame cleaned and primed. On gasket-set glass, the seal is checked and cleaned or replaced.
  4. Set the new glass. The new pane goes in with fresh adhesive or into its seal, aligned so the trim and wiper fit back as they were.
  5. Reconnect. The defroster tabs, the antenna lead and the wiper are reconnected, and the defroster is checked.
  6. Hand over. You are told when the car is ready and what to avoid while the adhesive cures.

How long it takes, and the first day after

Impex says back glass replacement takes one to two hours. Pickup sliders and glass with a lot of trim sit at the longer end; a simple fixed rear window at the shorter end. Plan for the cleanup as part of that time. A broken rear window can leave glass in places you will not find on your own for weeks.

After the job, leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours. The tabs that feed power to the grid are bonded to the glass, and the grid and fresh adhesive need that time before they are heated. For the first day it also helps to skip the car wash and to close the hatch or trunk gently.

Before the technician arrives

  • Take valuables out of the car, especially if the glass was broken in a break-in.
  • Cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to the paint, not to the glass edge, to keep rain out.
  • Do not drive with loose glass on the rear deck: it can slide forward under braking.
  • Do not try to pull broken pieces out of the frame by hand.
  • If the car was broken into, report it to the police and keep the report number for your insurer.

Pickup back glass and sliders

Pickup trucks are everywhere in Charlotte, from work trucks heading out I-85 to job sites in Gaston County to half-tons in Steele Creek driveways. Their back glass takes more abuse than a car’s: ladders, tools and loads in the bed, gravel off the tires and the odd stone from a trailer. A truck’s back glass may be one fixed pane, a manual slider with a center panel, or a power slider with its own motor and heater.

Sliders are replaced as a complete unit with their frame and tracks, so the right part matters even more. Give Impex the VIN and say whether the slider is manual or powered. Impex also works with company fleets and stocks common fleet glass, which helps when a work truck needs to be back on the road.

Does insurance cover a broken rear window?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass, and missiles or falling objects, among comprehensive losses. A branch through the back glass in a storm, a stone off a mower, a break-in: all of these normally go under comprehensive, and comprehensive pays the cost of the repair less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, so unless your policy includes full glass coverage, your comprehensive deductible applies.

Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who replaces the glass, and your insurer pays the same whichever shop you pick. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though insurers may look at how often you claim. Impex works with all major insurance providers and can handle the claim for you. Before you decide whether to claim at all, the windshield replacement cost in Charlotte page explains how the deductible works out; the same arithmetic applies to back glass.

Questions drivers ask

How long does back glass replacement take?

Impex says one to two hours, including clearing out the broken glass.

When can I use the rear defroster again?

Leave it off for 24 hours after the new glass goes in, so the grid connections and adhesive can settle before they are heated.

Can a chip in a rear window be repaired?

Usually not. Most rear windows are tempered glass, which cannot be repaired and often shatters completely after a hard hit. A rear window with a chip should be looked at and is normally replaced.

Is my defroster replaced with the new glass?

Yes. The defroster grid is part of the rear glass itself, so a new pane comes with a new grid. The technician reconnects the power tabs and checks it.

Is it safe to drive with the back glass broken?

Only for a short trip with the loose glass cleared, and with the opening covered against rain. Broken glass on the rear deck can slide forward under braking, and the car is open to anyone. Book the replacement as soon as you can.

Do you replace pickup sliding back glass?

Yes. Impex replaces fixed back glass, manual sliders and power sliders. Give the VIN and say which kind your truck has when you ask for a quote.
